MPD and GOHS Promote Traffic Safety
Maricopa, AZ -- In an attempt to increase traffic safety awareness and reduce collisions in the community, the City of Maricopa Police Department (MPD) recently conducted three traffic enforcement details from July through September. These details were made possible by grant funding provided by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).
The primary objective of the traffic details was to educate drivers of the hazards of unsafe driving behaviors. “Traffic enforcement is not about writing tickets. It is an opportunity
to speak with drivers about observed dangerous driving behaviors that ultimately put everyone at risk,” said Sgt. Stephen Judd. MPD focused on two such behaviors –
speeding and red light violations – throughout the detail and believes the traffic details were successful as evidenced by the results:
- Red light violation warnings -- 3
- Red light violation citations -- 8
- Speed violation citations -- 12
- Other moving violation warnings -- 2
- Other moving violations citations -- 6
- 3.9% decrease in property damage collisions in 2012 during same period (July-September)
MPD would like to acknowledge the GOHS for their efforts and commitment to increasing public awareness and safe driving throughout the state of Arizona.
