From the Editor:

It is with sincere regret that we announce the (forced) resignation of Maricopa Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jim McMichael.

McMichael has made several changes in how the Chamber operates with and for its members. Of particular note, he has been holding regular meetings with City employees to encourage business growth and ease the interactions business must have with City departments. He also enlarged the Chamber office, allowing space for business advertising in the office and small meetings.

While Maricopa may not be “friendly” to business, McMichael helped to make the City at least less hostile to business than it was prior to his tenure with the Chamber. He also gave us hope for further progress in that direction.

McMichael has taken his job seriously, both from the standpoint of helping Maricopa and helping the businesses that make up (or should make up) the economic environment of Maricopa. On most days, he has been easy to locate – in the Chamber Office, interacting with business owners and visitors. He made a visit to “the chamber office” a lot more pleasant – and productive – than it is in small cities where it is staffed by a volunteer who hands out brochures.

The loss of Jim McMichael is a loss not just to the Chamber office but to all the Chamber member businesses in the Maricopa area. He will surely be missed.

His straight-talking up-front manner may be abrasive to a few people, but he always “tells it like it is.” With McMichael, you always know the way it really is and where you stand with it. Isn’t that preferable to the lies often told in the name of being “politically correct”?

If the Chamber of Commerce is to serve business and the City, isn’t it time to put aside “politics” and “egos” and get on with the business of business?
