Southwest Classical Dance Institute (SCDI), one of the most respected ballet companies in Arizona, is now teaching Classical Ballet Technique classes in Maricopa.

Southwest Classical Dance Institute, an Arizona nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, is a professional dance organization specifically created to train young dance artists with a view to continuing university education or professional careers. They are also the only Arizona classical dance organization that offers Vaganova (fusing elements of French, Italian, and other methods as well as influences from Russian dancers and teachers) based training. The instructors have had careers at prestigious academies including the Kirov Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, and much more. Through collaboration with area dance studios and schools, SCDI is able to fulfill its mission of providing the highest levels of classical ballet training to the youth of Arizona.

Throughout the summer, SCDI will be teaching classes at Xpressions Center for the Arts on Thursday evenings from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Beginning in the fall, classes will switch to Wednesday evenings.

An exciting aspect of this program is there will be LIVE classical ballet music provided by a trained ballet piano accompanist. “This is the professional ballet program young dancers in Maricopa and Casa Grande have been dreaming about. Most have to travel to Scottsdale for this type of professional atmosphere,” said Xpressions owner Julie Stanfill.

In addition, SCDI provides students in the southwest region a rigorous summer intensive program - --the third annual “Master Class Series” is scheduled to take place at Arizona State University in Tempe June 18-30, 2012.

“We try to bring some of the world’s most prestigious and influential master teachers to Arizona to join the SCDI team, so that Arizona students have the same opportunity for world class training without the need or expense of travel to the East coast for a similar program,” said SCDI Artistic Director Natasha Brooksher.

The program runs for two weeks of intensive training in classical ballet technique, pointe, repertoire/variations, contemporary, character, hip-hop, Pilates, and more. For more information on the Master Class Series 2012, including how to register and pay, please visit www.swcdi.org.
