Ongoing efforts give back to the community and earth-friendly initiatives
Maricopa, AZ -- In its ongoing effort to give back to the community, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort’s HERO employee volunteers broke its property record for the amount of time and money donated in 2011 through sponsored employee community involvement initiatives. The resort and its employees continue to donate their time and attention via participation in events throughout the year that benefit local non-profits and various earth-friendly initiatives.
“Not only does this program bring together our employees, but it’s an amazing way for us to reach out to the community and give back to the local residents and programs that are most in need,” said HR Director of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Beth Amoroso. “With earth-friendly initiatives having been at the forefront in recent years, it’s truly become a focus of our organization and for our employees on an individual level.”
A case in point is Harrah’s Ak-Chin employee Candice Van Etten who converted her 1985 Volkswagen Golf Diesel to run on vegetable oil. “After having converted to vegetable oil it saves on fuel cost and air quality, in addition to emissions being much lower from having an exhaust that is a plant-based fuel,” said Van Etten. After the one-month project of converting the vehicle Van Etten now gets approximately 150 miles per gallon and saves $2,900 annually on fuel costs.
As an organization, Harrah’s Ak-Chin surpassed their 2010 total of 4,676 hours by volunteering 9,945 hours in 2011 and iswell on the way to surpassing that in 2012. The property also provided monetary and in-kind donations amounting to more than $20,000 from involvement in events such as Earth Day, Keep Arizona Beautiful Luncheon, Clean the World campaign, F.O.R. Maricopa and Ak-Chin Social Services’ food drives, Recycle Association of Maricopa events, and many more.
