Congratulations are definitely in order for Maricopa’s Track/Field team as they finish yet another successful season! Seven members of the men’s team competed at Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Division II State Championships, held May 9-12 at Mesa Community College. They returned home as champions with two state medals, two National Elite performances, and five New Personal Records. In overall team scoring, Maricopa finished 16th out of 54 competing schools. Below are the details.

800m Run:
Senior John Newman ran a tight race against a talented field, all 23 of whom finished within 9 seconds of each other. John’s 2:04.65 earned only 21st place in spite of being close to a personal record time. Top three spots went to Salpointe Catholic (Tucson), Cactus Shadows (Scottsdale), and Peoria.

1600m Run (medal)
Senior Chris Lessard set a New Personal Record for himself with a run of 4:21.25, earning the 2nd place medal and the title of National Elite. Four runners battled for the finish line literally within a step of each other. Salpointe Catholic took the trophy, with Peoria and Cactus Shadows running 3rd and 4th.

110m Hurdles:
Senior Randal Barber ran a spectacular preliminary race, qualifying for finals with a 2nd place run of 14:77 -- a New Personal Record time. In the finals, however, he failed to finish clean and was awarded no score. Verrado High School (Buckeye) won the event, followed by Queen Creek.

4x400m Relay:
Competition was exceptionally stiff, with 17 teams finishing within 16 seconds of each other. Maricopa’s ‘A’ team (Tim Byrd, Tim Boyer, John Newman, Randal Barber) ran it in 3:31.83 – faster than their Championship performance by more than twenty seconds – yet earned only 14th place. Washington High School (Phoenix) won the event with 3:21.29.

4x800m Relay (medal):
Maricopa’s ‘A’ team (Caleb St. Gelais, Chris Lessard, Gibran Aguilar, John Newman) turned in a National Elite time of 8:09.71, a new school record and good enough for the 3rd place medal. This time bettered their record-setting score at Championships by more than 10 seconds. Beaten by Cactus Shadows (8:05.49) and Arcadia (8:06.70).

Long Jump:
Sophomore Tim Byrd, 6th place finisher at Championships, was disappointed at State. His flight of 19-09.00 earned only 19th place. Event was won by Raymond S Kellis High School (Glendale) with a flight of 23-00.00.

Triple Jump:
Junior Tim Boyer had an outstanding flight of 40-11.50, good enough for 3rd in Flight One of this event. This is a New Personal Record for him, three feet farther than he achieved at Championships where he won 6th place. Competition was much stiffer in the State finals. Canyon Del Oro (Oro Valley) took the top spot with 47-00.25.
