Voting -- the right to choose
Letter
Sunday, March 11, 2012
When I announced my candidacy for Mayor of Maricopa last June, I never imagined how quickly the time would pass. Now the election is upon us, and as of Tuesday, March 13th at 7pm the citizens of Maricopa will decide who they will have as their next Council members and Mayor.
At this time, instead of taking a last opportunity to tell you why I think you should vote for me, I would like to pause and thank the citizens of Maricopa for their patience with our political process. Freedom and our election process is truly a double-edged sword. It offers us the excitement of a better tomorrow and provides us the greatest liberties and justices the world has ever seen. Yet at the same time, it clutters our beautiful cities and floods our local news outlets with political signs, advertisements, and ample amounts of rhetoric.
This “ability to choose” is what the founding fathers of our great country fought and died to give us. President John Adams expressed his sincere desire that we would fully strive to understand this as he stated: “Oh posterity, you will never know how much it cost us to preserve your freedom. I hope that you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.”
To my fellow citizens, I say let us indeed “make good use of it”. Let us return to the civility of our forefathers. Let us disagree without being disagreeable. Let us approach our differences with discourse, discussion and deference. Let us each participate in our community and strive to have a positive impact on the lives of others. Let us remember the sacrifices of those who have gone before us to earn and maintain our privilege to participate in the process. Let us each honor that memory by voting in this, and every, election.
By having ballots directly sent to the mailboxes of every registered voter for our city’s election cycle, the ease and convenience of voting is at an all-time high. I sincerely hope that we will each take the necessary time to turn off the TV and review and discuss the various candidates to find those that most closely align with our own beliefs, values, and whom you believe will do the best job in representing you and your City. In the age of TiVo and the web, the latest reality show can wait, voting cannot.
All ballots must be RECEIVED, not postmarked, by 7pm on the 13th. Should you run out of time to mail them you can always fill them out, sign the back of the envelope and drop them off at City Hall until 7pm on election day. They have a locked County ballot box for your drop-off convenience.
To all of the candidates running, let me offer my sincere thanks. It is a great sacrifice to put oneself out there for public scrutiny but wonderful that our citizens have that ever-coveted “freedom to choose” because of your efforts and dedication. Once again thank you Maricopa for your patience and support, and I know that together we can make Maricopa our region’s greatest city. I humbly ask for your confidence and your vote.
Sincerely,
Christian Price
