Banquet time for MCOC members
Alice Shoaf

Maricopa Chamber of Commerce (MCOC) members, the Annual MCOC Awards Banquet promises to be a gala event you won’t want to miss. Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort is hosting the event on January 27, beginning with cocktails at 6:30 P.M. Tickets are $50 per person or $80 per couple, and are available online at www.maricopachamber.org. You can also call the Chamber office.

The Board is still accepting nominations until January 7 for your favorite business or individual in the following categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year. Awards will be presented to the winners at the banquet.

To enter your nomination, help sponsor this event, or get information, contact Board Member Tim Hassert at hn_tim@cox.net or (480) 612-4131.

This is also the Annual Members Meeting, and the Board fervently hopes all members will attend and take part. “This year we have changed pretty much everything,” stated Treasurer Courtney Cronin, “and that’s quite an accomplishment.” More work is planned, and member input is sorely needed. Hassert stated, “I’m a firm believer that you have no right to complain if you don’t vote.”

A motion to reconsider the scheduled bylaw change was discussed. Board Member Mike Richey noted several portions of the current bylaws are outdated. He suggested taking the next year to complete a thorough review and revision, to be presented to members for vote in January 2013. “It’s the responsible thing to do,” he said. The motion was passed by majority.

Other news

Recognizing both the need and advertising power of the Chamber of Commerce City Map, the Board has contracted Maricopa Design Company to produce it by mid-January. Owner Carrie Ring is uniquely qualified for the job and is already contacting individual members for their input. Maps will be available at the Chamber office. Maps are also sent to prospective business owners by the City.

The search for a new Executive Director is underway and applications are still being accepted from both local and national sources. A committee was finalized, comprised of board and community members, to conduct interviews and present their recommendations. Part of the Director’s duties will include those of the Office Manager. Diane Bowman has resigned her position, and the decision was made not to fill the vacancy. LauRae Divito is filling in as Administrative Support, and is now the main contact at the Chamber office.

Free Small Business Training is again available to all current and prospective small business owners. MCOC and the City are partnering to provide comprehensive critical skills training on website development, marketing, and planning for growth. The four classes will be on the first and third Mondays in February and March, and are expected to last three to four hours each. Admission is first-come, first-served, with priority given to those licensed to operate within the city limits. A similar program conducted last fall had a waiting list. Seats are limited for this course, too, so reserve your spot early. You can register online at www.maricopachamber.org, or call the Chamber office.

If you have questions or need information, stop in at the office located at 44870 West Hathaway near the Post Office, or call (520) 568-9573. You can also access the official website at www.maricopachamber.org.
