  • Navajo Textiles:  100+ Years of Weaving Closes
    Sunday, January 8, 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
    This is your final chance to see how Navajo weaving has changed over the past century, retaining its beauty, quality, and vitality while allowing freedom for innovation. View some of the best examples of this living art form from the late 19th century to the present drawn from the Heard Museum’s collection and other important loaned collections.
  • Heard Guild Presents … Dr. Deni J. Seymour
    Tuesday, January 10, 1:30 P.M.
    Encanto Room
    Deni J. Seymour, an archaeologist with Dos Locos Consultores, LLC, will discuss “Geronimo’s Wickiup:  Archaeological Perspectives on the Cañon de los Embudos Surrender Site.” This program is free and open to the public.
  • Native Peoples of the Southwest Short Course Begins
    Thursday, January 12, 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.
    This popular four-session course provides an opportunity to learn about the history, art, and cultures of the Southwest and the first peoples of the region. The course is taught by Heard Museum Education Director Gina Laczko. Sessions are held on Thursdays from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M., from January 12 to February 2, 2012, at Heard Museum Phoenix. The fourth session includes a tour of the Heard’s internationally renowned collection. Cost:  $60 for Heard Museum members, $70 for non-members.   • Guild Meeting

    Steele Auditorium
    Speaker: Manuelito Wheeler, director of the Navajo Nation Museum, will speak about the topic “25 Years of Change on the ’Rez.” Free and open to the public.
  • Valley Readers Theatre Group Performance
    Wednesday, January 18, 1:00 P.M.
    Encanto Room
    Readers Theatre is theatre of the imagination, an amalgamation of storytelling and radio theatre. Enjoy as professional actors retell tales of old Arizona in the first of a series of reading commemorating the Arizona Centennial. Free and open to the public.
  • Opening of Facing the Sunland:  Works by America Meredith + Sally Ann Paschall + Kay WalkingStick

    Berlin Gallery at the Heard Museum Shop
    Experience and bring home works by three talented Cherokee visual artists during the opening reception for the Berlin Gallery’s new show, which runs through February 13. Free and open to the public.
  •  Indigenous Visions
    Saturday, January 21, 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
    Heard Museum Shop
    See and speak with Native artists, enjoy wonderful music by Canyon Records performers in the Central Courtyard, and stop for lunch at the Courtyard Café. Admission is free and open to the public.
  • Apache Celebration -- Dinner and Performance by Dishchii’bikoh Apache Group
    Saturday, January 21, 5:30 to 8:00 P.M.
    Steele Auditorium
    In anticipation of the upcoming exhibit Beyond Geronimo: The Apache Experience, join us for a special treat: an Apache-inspired meal, followed by a cultural Apache dance. Apache dancers will perform the Crown Dance and the Woman Warrior Dance, accompanied by drummers and singers. A cash bar will open at 5:30, and dinner is served at 6:00 P.M. A brief introduction of the dancers will precede the performance at 7:00 P.M. Cost: $100 for Heard Museum members, $125 for non-members.   • Heard Museum Guild Library Book Sale & Treasure Market
    January 27 to 29, 2012; Noon to 5:00 P.M. Friday (members only); 9:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Saturday; 9:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Sunday
    Choose from more than 30,000 titles ranging from rare books to paperbacks, historic tomes to cookbooks. In addition to fabulous book bargains, a selection of unique art and collectibles can be found, including American Indian and vintage jewelry, katsina dolls, prints, pottery and ceramic vessels. Members shop first on Friday, and everyone can bid Friday and Saturday on special silent-auction items. Proceeds benefit the Billie Jane Baguley Heard Museum Library and Archives. Free admission (museum admission additional).

    Join in a discussion of the book Blood and Thunder: An Epic of the American West by Hampton Sides, which tells the history of the fight for Navajo lands. This event is in partnership with Appaloosa Library.
