The high cost of the MUSD Tax Override ballot
E. Marie Murray
Monday, November 7, 2011
One wonders . . . while the Maricopa Unified School District (MUSD) is asking for money from taxpayers (again), why did they spend our money on a separate Tax Override ballot? The November 8 ballot for Maricopa voters has a single issue: the MUSD Tax Override.
This issue has been turned down three (3!) times by voters. Now, the MUSD has required that taxpayers spend money (in a decidedly down financial period) to print a separate ballot with this single issue on it.
How much did we, the taxpayers, spend on this ballot for MUSD? According to Steve Kizer, Director of the Pinal County Elections Department, the “overall cost” of the ballot is $47,000.
The MUSD can’t seem to understand that “no means no.” While the District may have a legitimate need for additional funds due to changes in State revenue, ultimately that $47,000 comes out of our pockets. If spending $47,000 for the ballot is an example of “fiscal responsibility,” it gives us something else to wonder about: If the Override should pass, would the MUSD be any more responsible with that money?
This is one taxpayer who will be voting “no” – again.
