2011 Child Passenger Safety Week -- September 18-24
Received from Maricopa Police Department

MARICOPA, Arizona – The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is encouraging all law enforcement agencies to participate in this year’s Child Passenger Safety Week campaign, from September 18 through September 24. The City of Maricopa Police Department (MPD) recognizes the need for heightened child passenger safety awareness and will be an active participant in this year’s program. During this week, MPD will conduct educational awareness, enhanced enforcement, and increased public visibility of Arizona’s child passenger safety laws.

As a participating law enforcement agency in this statewide endeavor, MPD’s campaign objective this year is education with a focus on voluntary compliance. MPD suggests the following guidelines:
  • Children under the age of one should always be secured in a rear-facing car seat.
  • Children between 1-3 years of age should be secured in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the top height or weight limit allowed by the car seat’s manufacturer.
  • Children between 4-7 years of age should be secured in a forward-facing car seat until the reach the top height or weight limit allowed by the car seat’s manufacturer.
  •  Children 8-12 years of age should be secured in a booster seat until they are tall enough to securely fit in a standard seat belt/shoulder harness.
  • Follow your car seat’s manufacturer’s instructions and vehicle owner’s manual for proper installation.
For additional information, please check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website at www.nhtsa.gov.

Editor's Note:  This is a particularly timely notice for all parents.  It was with great sadness that we reported the death of a 3-year-old boy this week in Maricopa.  The boy was not in a child passenger restraint.  You can read the articles at http://www.copanews.com/Article.aspx?ID=3026 and http://www.copanews.com/Article.aspx?ID=3031.
